JOB PURPOSE: The primary objective of the Senior Engineer - CPI is to use basic engineering disciplines along with the fact-based decision-making tools to resolve complex product, technology and manufacturing process issues. Incumbent shall function as the project leader for CPI projects addressing quality, regulatory, or current product improvements for various system teams such as Large structure, Light Fabrication, Engine Installation & Cooling and Hydraulics installation (for mining products). To direct and participate in the concept and design of complex engineering product or process projects for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability.

JOB DUTIES: This position represents the journey level position within design engineering. The key role of a Sr. Engineer – Design is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a project. This position will be accountable for contributing to the concept, development, and design of complex components, subsystems, or processes. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales, and customer perception.

Success factors for the Sr. Engineer – Design include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to-date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.

Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: design and promote new components and sub processes; perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products or processes; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers.

Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key skills to be developed at this level are failure prediction and management, technology time cost analysis, spatial design, conceptual design, practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE: < strong> Requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering curriculum plus 9-12 years of experience or a master’s degree in mechanical engineering curriculum plus 6-8 years of experience or a doctorate degree plus >3 years of experience. Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments. Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as employees in other units, customers, and suppliers. Knowledgeable design process & tools – Good understanding of APQP, DFMEA, GD&T, CPPD process. Awareness of 6 sigma DMAIC & DMEDI methods and tools.

Top Candidates will also have: < strong> It is expected to have participated in at least one full product development cycle to provide end to end complex engineering solutions encompassing design, analysis, test & validation. Large Mining Truck or any mining products Engineering, Manufacturing, Test and or Product Support Experience. Training and Experience with Caterpillar’s CPI tools and processes. Experience as a 6 Sigma Black Belt with strong product understanding at system & sub systems integration to the detail. Process & tools: Familiar with any designer’s tool preferably Creo & Teamcenter environment. Creo & any FEA software experience.
